This week, my baby girl Ariana, turned one.
I adore the first year. Of course it is rather exhausting (understatement) and there's very little time for a mother to give herself. But the feeling of that little tiny person that you adore so much being so dependent on you is one of my most treasured feelings. They have a need that no one else can meet and it creates a bond between mother and baby that is so incredibly special. I have been so blessed to have been given two such wonderful first years with both of my girls.
So this week I have, in a way, mourned the end of my little one's "babyhood" and tried to prepare myself for the beginning of her "toddlerhood". I can't believe that her first year is over - in the blink of an eye. And I know that her second year will go just as fast.
For my eldest's first birthday we did a very simple session. Just her amongst nature in a tutu holding a wooden number 1 and a bunch of balloons. For Ariana's first birthday I desperately wanted to do a cake smash.
We planned to do it on the afternoon of her birthday. Ariana was having her afternoon nap. I was frantically trying to bake a cake in the kitchen praying that it would cool down in time for me to apply the pink icing, all the while begging my husband to go out and build me a wooden box for her to smash her cake on (there's nothing like leaving these things to the last minute). I went outside to set up and realised that the sky was filling with big black clouds. We checked the forecast and realised that the equivalent of a monsoon was approaching our home and we had about 15 minutes to get the session done. I ran to get Ariana up, my husband ran outside to build the box and I shoved the cake into the freezer so I could apply the icing.
But where there's a will there's a way. So after rushing around like mad people and praying that God would hold the rain just a little bit longer, my one year old Ariana had her cake smash.
My vision - simple, magical and sweet. Earthy tones and a touch of pink. I am so happy with how they turned out and am so happy that I will have these images to look back on and remember our wonderful first year together.
A huge thank you to Entwined Studio for providing the amazing vintage "Happy Birthday" bunting that we used both in the cake smash and at Ariana's first birthday party. I highly recommend Entwined Studio buntings for every special occasion. Ariana's bloomers were from Millmoodesigns and her crown from Whimsy and Wild.
Here are some images that I captured from the afternoon. I hope you enjoy them.

Mesmerised by her cake (which looks pretty good despite the story behind it's creation)
Not completely sure about the icing on her hand. This is her standard "suspicious" face so I am so pleased to have captured it.
